First Week of Class Insanity

Classes started again last Thursday.  I have two Research & Argument classes (40 students total) back-to-back, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The students are still settling in to the schedule, and I'm doing almost exactly the same thing I did last semester, so I'm pretty well settled.

Today I had my first official meeting with my dissertation director, which was interesting because she was very caffeinated.  (She got a single-cup coffee maker for Christmas and keeps it in her office.  And apparently all of her classes are AWESOME. BECAUSE SHE'S ALWAYS GOT COFFEE.)  We put together an agenda--prospectus by middle of semester, chapter one by end of semester, two more chapters over summer, final chapter and intro and conclusion next fall, defend next spring--that sounds good and doable to both of us.

I had plans to go to the library tomorrow morning and start on the research for my first actual assignment--a rough bibliography for chapter one--until my bigger kitty, Molly, got into my cross-stitching and swallowed my needle.  Cue frantic call to the vet, mad dash to the vet, x-rays, and leaving Molly with them overnight so they can see if she's going to pass the needle or if they need to do surgery to take it out.  So no library for me tomorrow, cause by the time I got there, parking would be insane and I'd get nothing done.

So my semester consists of dissertation writing, prelim studying, and teaching.  I think it will be better than last semester, just in terms of workload, and as my director says, dissertating is FUN. Because you get to focus on stuff that's really interesting to you.  (And sit in your director's office and drink coffee and be entertained by her extreme caffeine high.)
