Book Review: Foxmask by Juliet Marillier

Foxmask (The Light Isles, #2)Foxmask by Juliet Marillier
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 stars

At eighteen years old, Thorvald learns that he is the son of Somerled, a cruel man who perpetrated horrors on the people of the Light Isles before his banishment. Angry that his mother lied to him about his parentage and determined to find out what kind of man his father truly is, Thorvald embarks on a journey to find Somerled. Creidhe, a childhood friend in love with Thorvald, stows away on his journey. Over the course of nearly a year, Creidhe and Thorvald grow up and grow apart, finding their own paths and destinies, and learning that people can change.

Foxmask doesn't quite stand up to Wolfskin, either mythologically or historically, but it is still a well-crafted, well-told tale that captures the essence of questions such as how much fate and parentage have to do with one's personality and choices, and whether people can choose to change. A true coming-of-age tale not only for the young people, but also the older people who come to terms with their choices and the events of Wolfskin.
